Inside Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom’s relationship

Hollywood may be its own small world, but there are still some former hookups and current couples that we scratch our heads about. Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden have found marital bliss, but their relationship sure caught people off guard at first. The same could be said about former couples like Sandra Bullock and motorcycle builder Jessie James, Ryan Reynolds and Alanis Morissette, and Josh Groban and 2 Broke Girls star Kat Dennings.

Pop musician Katy Perry has quite a unique dating history of her own. Speaking of Groban, Perry revealed on The Late Late Show with James Corden that her hit song “The One That Got Away” is about the “You Raise Me Up” singer. Then, there was her on-again, off-again romance with John Mayer. And we can’t forget about Perry’s relationship with comedian Russell Brand, which was a courtship that sparkled and fizzled out like a firework.
Finally, of course, there is Perry’s fiancé, Orlando Bloom. The two are going strong as of 2020, and we are so intrigued by the pair, we wanted to take a closer look inside Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom’s relationship.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom owe it to the dance floor

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom have a meet-cute made for the movies. They flirted at a Golden Globes after-party in early 2016, but it didn’t begin with cocktails and typical conversation. Rather, it started on the dance floor. “Katy and Orlando Bloom had a total dance-off — it was the best part of the party,” a source told Us Weekly. “Katy literally dropped to the floor and was waving her booty around, beckoning Orlando.”

Bloom told Mirror that they actually connected at the awards ceremony thanks to Denzel Washington — whom Perry was sitting with — and some burgers. Bloom recalled, “When I saw that box of burgers arrive, I wandered over and said to Denzel, ‘Hey man, can I have one of those?’ Denzel said, ‘Sure,’ so I took one and winked at Katy.”
They got closer at the party. “He would lean in to whisper into her ear and touch the small of her back as they chatted,” a party guest divulged to Us Weekly. After they’d been seen together on a few occasions, including a birthday dinner for Bloom’s manager, another source told Us Weekly in a separate report, “[Perry’s] having fun with Orlando. I don’t think she’s seeing this as long-term yet. It’s a fun hookup thing right now.” Perry made her relationship with Bloom Instagram official in May 2016 when she posted a picture with Bloom in Cannes. The couple appears exhausted in the photo, laying on the steps of the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are ‘opposites’

On paper, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom seem like two peas in a pod: He’s an actor known for his roles in epic movie franchises like Lord Of The Rings and Pirates Of The Caribbean and she’s a mega pop star known for upbeat hits like “Firework” and “Teenage Dream.” Sure, they work in different fields of entertainment, but they’re both wildly famous performers who know what it’s like to exist in the world as a celebrity. However, Perry and Bloom may not be as alike as one may expect.

As the “Peacock” songstress tells it, she and Bloom have very different personalities. “He’s always trying to get me to hike, yoga, eat vegan,” she said when she and Luke Bryan were chatting with ET in 2018. She agreed with her fellow American Idol judge that she’d consider a hike to Taco Bell. “There’s a balance,” Perry continued. She said her relationship was a case of “opposites attract,” and that perhaps Bloom admires her for her ability to multitask.
Now, that’s not to say they never line up. For Halloween 2016, they dressed up as Hillary and Bill Clinton for Kate Hudson’s spooky bash. And, of course, there was that time when their hair matched for a few weeks in 2017.

Time apart worked for Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom split up in February 2017 after dating for about 13 months. “Before rumors or falsifications get out of hand, we can confirm that Orlando and Katy are taking respectful, loving space at this time,” a statement from their reps (via People) read. Not many breakup statements mention “loving space” though. Plus, Perry was clear about her relationship with Bloom in March 2017 tweet. “HOW BOUT A NEW WAY OF THINKING FOR 2017,” she wrote. “U can still b friends & love ur former partners! No one’s a victim or a villain, get a life y’all!”

Their love for one another didn’t fizzle out: As Perry hinted at in an ET interview, she and Bloom were back together by 2018. When talking to People about the “space” she and her beau took, Perry said, “It’s really about an individual journey that makes the whole thing better. We both had to decide to go on that journey separately because it’s not my half and your half that makes a whole. It’s my wholeness and your wholeness that makes this whole thing happen.”
“If it’s a real relationship, it’s going to challenge you into your best self,” the “Roar” singer admitted, talking about the problems she’s had with Bloom. “I really understand what Justin Timberlake said about, ‘You’re my mirror,’ because it’s true,” she shared. “They bring up all this stuff you can’t really see about yourself.”

A retreat changed Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry’s lives

Orlando Bloom has stayed committed to his personal growth throughout his relationship with Katy Perry, and it’s created the distance between them pre-breakup. “[Orlando] went to this program called The Hoffman Process and he came back completely changed,” Perry said on The Zane Lowe Show. She shared that she thought it was some sort of spiritual cleanse like her boyfriend was “always doing.” But Lowe called the process “deep work” and it’s clear Perry wasn’t expecting such transformation.

“He came back, and he wasn’t like, falling for any of my bullsh*t anymore,” she continued. “And so I was like, ‘Well, I’m bored and this isn’t exciting anymore.'” The couple is back together and Perry has since gone through The Hoffman Process herself. So what is it, exactly? According to the website, it’s “a week-long residential and personal growth retreat that helps participants identify negative behaviors, moods, and ways of thinking that developed unconsciously and were conditioned in childhood.”
Perry told Vogue Australia that “the reaction of the public” following the release of Witness left her heartbroken. This was a catalyst for why she decided to go on the retreat. “I was ready to let go of anything that was holding me back from being my ultimate self,” she said. She emerged from the process with new priorities in life, which has helped her relationship reach new milestones.

Nothing cloudy about Orlando Bloom’s sky-high proposal

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom got engaged on a classically romantic day: Valentine’s Day 2019. According to Brides, while the engagement cuisine was also a very classic choice (Italian), Bloom aimed high when it came to his proposal destination — literally. He proposed to Perry while the couple was in the sky on a helicopter ride. When they landed on a roof, their family and friends were there to greet and celebrate with them. That night seems like it had the perfect balance of romance, tradition, and family incorporated into such an epic moment for both of them. Well done, Will Turner. Well done.

Of course, when the couple was ready to share the news with the public, they both took to Instagram to post a photo of Perry’s stunning flower-shaped diamond and ruby ring. Brides spoke to a certified gemologist from the Diamond Producers Association who estimated that the ring was 2.5 carats in total and could be valued at a cool $5 million dollars. Give us a second while we catch our breath.
“Creative diamond halos, whether floral like this one or geometric, really complement the uniqueness of natural diamonds and highlight the center stone. My guess is that Katy has a special connection to the color red which is why she chose a ruby,” the gemologist told Brides of the one-of-a-kind ring.

Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry lost a beloved pet

Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry’s teacup poodle, Mighty, sadly went missing in July 2020. The pup escaped from a yard in Montecito where the couple was staying while visiting family, Bloom told Santa Barbara News-Press. That’s right, Bloom contacted the press to help him find his missing dog, who was a gift from Perry. “He’s pocket size, so he can travel everywhere with me. He’s been a wonderful companion,” the actor told the outlet.

After the dog was missing for about a week, Bloom announced his death on Instagram. “Mighty’s on the other side now,” the caption read. “He was more than a companion. It was a soul connection for sure. I’m sorry. I love you. Thank you. RIP my MIGHTY HEART my little fellow.” He also shared a video that was taken as he got Mighty’s name tattooed to his chest.
Bloom told Mirror that though Mighty’s death was heartbreaking, he found a bittersweet silver lining. “It was probably good for Katy to see me go to the lengths that I went to, to try and find him,” he said. He went on to call Mighty “the physical, outward representation” of his heart. “And funnily enough, he’s probably made way for this little girl who is coming into my life soon,” he said.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom’s wedding was put on hold

From the moment they got engaged in February 2019, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom have been trying to organize their wedding— but fate isn’t cooperating. Us Weekly reported in December 2019 that the couple was meant to wed that month, but a source said, “They changed the timing due to the location they want.” Usually, a postponement means there is trouble in paradise, but the source clarified, “they’re beyond in love.” They were also reportedly set on having one destination wedding and one wedding at home— because celebs can do that.

The insider also told Us Weekly that they originally thought they would start a family soon after they were married, but there was another change of plans: Bloom and Perry’s daughter Daisy was born in August 2020. The following month, Us Weekly confirmed that the couple would not be getting married that year. “Planning for any wedding has been put on hold,” the outlet’s tipster said, noting that Daisy is “their sole focus.” As the source put it, a 2020 wedding “just wasn’t meant to be.” Considering the coronavirus pandemic, we’d say they definitely made a solid call.

There was a big announcement in a Katy Perry video

Katy Perry announced to the public that she and Orlando Bloom were expecting a baby together like only an international pop star can. In March 2020, she released the music video for “Never Worn White,” a song in which she sings, “You asked the question, I said, “Yes”/ But I’m scared/’Cause I’ve never worn white/But I wanna get it right/Yeah, I really wanna try with you.” At the end of the clip, there is a side view of her cradling her baby bump in a semi-sheer dress. An official statement arrived via Twitter where the “I Kissed A Girl” singer joked, “omg so glad I don’t have to suck it in anymore.”

Perry spoke about her pregnancy and decision to reveal the news in a video on and Instagram live (via Us Weekly). “We’re excited and happy,” she said. “It’s probably the longest secret I’ve ever had to keep. I like to tell you guys everything, but I knew I would tell you in the best way, which was through a piece of music because that’s how I speak to you. That’s how we speak together with each other.”

Katy Perry says they were ‘ready’ to have a baby

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom planned to begin having kids after they tied the knot, but apparently, the wedding delays got to be too much and they simply couldn’t wait any longer. “We were both conscious about [getting pregnant], we were both ready. It was no mistake. It was no accident,” Perry said on The Zane Lowe Show.

Perry admitted that she didn’t necessarily see herself as the most maternal person, so that’s why she waited until she got to a specific point in her life to get pregnant. “I was terrified of having a child, I was like, ‘I don’t know how to do this…it’ll break,” the “Harleys in Hawaii” singer told Lowe. She’s also ready to “shift her energy” away from her career to focus on her daughter. As she told Lowe, “She won’t care that her mom is Katy Perry, she won’t give a f*ck.” That’s one way to put it. We’re just happy that the couple reached a healthy place and are ready to embark on the journey of parenthood together.

Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry sure do dig daisies

We’re not sure if it has anything to do with Orlando Bloom’s last name or not, but he and Katy Perry do seem to have a thing for daisies. Not only is there a song called “Daisies” on Perry’s 2020 album, Smile, but as the pop singer revealed to ET Canadait’s her fiancé’s favorite song out of all 12 tracks.

We don’t know if the title came first, but Bloom’s fondness for the song might have something to do with the fact that his infant daughter is named Daisy. “Welcome to the world, Daisy Dove Bloom!” Perry and Bloom wrote on their respective Instagram accounts after UNICEF shared the news. “We are floating with love and wonder from the safe and healthy arrival of our daughter,” the couple told UNICEF in a statement. Daisy is Perry’s first child, and Bloom shares a son with ex-wife Miranda Kerr.
Daisy’s birthday is August 27, 2020, just one day before Perry’s album Smile was released. Suffice to say, the “Hot N Cold” singer had a busy summer in 2020.

Real love has blossomed for Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom

They were quite a surprising pair in early 2016, but by now the world knows that Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry are the real deal. A genuine relationship outside of the spotlight can be hard for two celebrities to maintain. But Perry and Bloom do it by holding each other accountable for being their best selves. Bloom is quieter about the relationship than Perry is (or has had less to promote lately), but as Perry told the host of The Zane Lowe Show, part of the reason their relationship works is that the actor isn’t “here for” his pop star fiancée’s on-stage persona. “He doesn’t let me rest,” she said. “He’s not Katy Perry’s biggest fan. He’s here for Kathryn Hudson.”

During their break, Perry kept Orlando’s ego in check when she ranked him as her second-best lover in an interview with James Corden. Evidently, that did not bother Bloom too much. As he told The Times in 2018 (via Z100), “She’s a remarkable human being.” But he admitted that he was as surprised to be dating her as we were by the pairing. “When you get hit sideways [by love] you get hit sideways. You don’t pick who you fall in love with.” Well, isn’t that romantic… kind of.
